Falls have been estimated to be the leading cause of serious injury and death in persons older than 65 years old. Falls account for 50% of accidental deaths in the elderly and 10% of falls result in hospitalization. Research about fall prevention in the elderly has shown that a progressive exercise program focusing on moderate to high-intensity balance exercises appears to be one of the most effective interventions to prevent falls.
Premier Rehab physical therapists provide an extensive, individualized assessment to determine the cause(s) of decreased balance and increased risk of falling can include analysis of posture, balance, strength, coordination and function.
From the assessment, your Premier Rehab physical therapist will develop a customized balance retraining,s trength and conditioning program and education program that is both clinically and research based and may include:
- Stretching key muscle groups
- Strengthening including lower extremities and core musculature
- Balance re-training including static and dynamic surfaces
- Education and review of home health hazards
Throughout the treatment process, we conduct period reassessments to monitor improvement.
